Tony Cicirelli's defiant ways as a young teen get him nothing better than a dangerous brush with the law. When he refuses to move to Italy with his abusive father and alcoholic mother, he’s placed in a foster home that is far from appealing. But he’s certainly not stupid, and he does well in school.
Eventually, he's rescued from the foster home by his grandparents and moves on to a far better and more stable life. His talents and hard work get him positions of authority and also put him on a firm financial footing. Girls seek him out, but each one is pushier and more possessive than the last. In Hawaii, one of them meets a tragic end.
Tony attends Boston College and eventually gets both a B.A. and a master's degree in history. He has always wanted to teach. When he meets his future wife, Jessica, and also commits himself to the Lord, he seems to be headed for lasting happiness.
Then he goes on a motorcycle ride in a storm with his old friend Steve. Just as they are almost home, a bullet from a roadside assailant puts Tony in a long coma and robs him of many of his memories.
How much of his old life can he recover? Will love from Jessica and his relatives, plus his commitment to the Lord, be enough to bring him fresh fulfillment and purpose?
We watch as Tony moves into this new phase of his life, in which he is reborn in more ways than one. He also shows those in his world, including a deeply grateful homeless man, what true Christian charity looks like. The happiness that suffuses the last chapters of the book is nothing more than what Tony has earned on his long journey back from the brink of death.

Because the turning point in the novel involves a serious motocross accident, the cover features the dramatic photo of a motorcycle rider in mid-leap, against a stormy sky. He is dressed in black, gray, silver, and dark red, and the clouds are ominous shades of gray. The image as a whole telegraphs excitement, skill, and danger. At the top of the cover, the title letters are in black, and the author’s name is in white at the bottom. In the upper right-hand corner is a shining golden cross, symbolizing the Christian message of the book.

Woody Livingston earned a college degree, had a short but successful stint as a prizefighter, traveled to Russia three times during the height of the Cold War, played hockey for charity with the Washington Capitals, and flew a small plane — all while being completely deaf and going blind.

He realizes that he has to live by faith and not by sight, that he must reach out for a different kind of help before it's too late.
